Patience waned. “I am only a man,” I thought aloud. An aging hippie karatka with dirt under his fingernails and an attitude problem overheard my utterance and offered his own. “Wanna spar, pard?” I interpreted the dull yellow whites of his eyes as a betrayal of a veiled but deep-seated resignation to defeat. In karate? In life? Either way, I definitely wanted to spar. HELL yes. I wanted it bad.”
