My s.o. and I have run into this same discussion. I’ve, for lack of a better, word been a skeptic since I was a wee lad reading the amazing Canadian science magazine Owl. She grew up Catholic and as she’s Polish there are few cultures more Catholic than the one she grew up in and Polish catholicism is quite a mystical catholicism. While we both listen/read/watch various skeptical stuff, neither of us particularly wants to join the movement (me because I’m a lazy academic and she because she spends 4 days a week with 12 hour days saving the animals of Toronto). Canada doesn’t seem to have (out in the open at least) many of the issues that crop up in the heartland of the good ole U.S. of A. In fact when Natural History Museum’s Darwin exhibit made its way to the Royal Ontario Museum, my s.o. and I couldn’t help but comment how out of place the panel outlining things like the monkey trial and school boards around your nation banning the teaching of evolution seemed. This however, is a highly Toronto-centric view, Alberta, while a lovely province that is the place on many amazing fossil finds has many who’d be right at home in the kitchens of Jesusland.

I digress – but the one thing that struck me during your discussion is that perhaps the skeptical movement has the same sort of folk who were “untouchable” during high school, the chess club and D&D players (I write this as someone who did the former and a little bit of the latter) in it. As Evolutionary Psych tells us you female folk are always on the look out for high quality mates and perhaps one easy way to be perceived as a low quality mate is to be surrounded by a bunch of other males with nary a female in sight.

To sum up this part: perhaps what you’re seeing in the skeptical movement is not so much sexism (although your argument is pretty solid when you lay out what a “typical” skeptic believes) but closer to F-o-phobia, where F stands for anything Female or feminine. I am not sure; perhaps it’d be worthwhile collecting stats on female membership of skeptics groups and statements from women (like yourself) who are part of skeptics groups about why they decided to join up to what is (to my perception from the outside at least) such a “sausage-fest”.

Last part: your nipples ain’t pornographic or obscene, however your suggestion of boobs and butts wasn’t so much threatening as appealing.

I don’t care which side of the gun control debate you’re on—even if you’re on the side of gun control, and you excuse his deliberate prevarication just because he agrees with you, what the hell is wrong with you? People interviewed by a documentarian at least expect to be represented honestly, but Moore doesn’t do that.

Makes sense to me. I love the show, but I can definitely see where it’s hard to get sponsors for it (probably part of why I love it). If the goal is to make a (paying) career from podcasting – which is pretty freakin’ cool – then I think you should go for it.

Personally, I love Coke, and wouldn’t stop drinking Coke no matter who they advertised with. I might even buy an extra Coke or two, if I was reminded of it by listening to your podcast. Thus, Coke should clearly advertise on Soccergirl. Perhaps literally on Soccergirl, like via temporary tattoo or something.

To cover just a few points of ‘poor design’: the rods and cones point towards the back, and the side of the retina where the light strikes is covered in a web of blood vessels. No sane peson would build a light sensor like that.

The lens is loosely attached so a bad blow can dislodge it, like the retina. The retina could be much more sensitive to light if some adjustable shading of the rods and cones were built in, like it is in some other animals. Man is certainly not at the top of the tree for eye design.

There’s a lovely book: “The Eye – A Natural History”, by Simon Ings, that goes into much more detail on more points than I can remember. I recommend it if you want to argue about eyes knowledgably.

What’s weird is almost all of your previous vids have been perfect, quality wise. The one before this had a weird framing problem, where there was a big black border (really, really big) around the whole video, but that was isolated.

Anyway, I really do enjoy your videos; perhaps even more than the podcasts. I think your lack of fear about being honest about what you want to say, as you want to say it, is what makes you compeling. I love the details you put into the videos, from the still images, the montages, and how you intersperse several trains of thought, switching back and forth for effect. Enough ass kissing.

I love your vidcasts. Always very creative and interesting. Only SoccerGirl could take a crappy snow globe from a box of batteries and make a 10 minute skit out of it.

That said, I’m only half way through and am pulling my hair out at the video quality. Something is very strange in the encoding. Quicktime info says the video is 14.8 frames per second. Maybe that’s why it’s all jerky and slightly out of sync.
